This may be the ultimate test of random knowledge. Hammered Trivia is hosting the first-ever Triangle-wide trivia tournament this summer to mark its 10th anniversary.

For 10 weeks, bars and restaurants across Raleigh, Cary, Durham, Chapel Hill + Rolesville will host weekly trivia nights leading up to a huge final showdown to win $1,000.

Getting started

Round one of the tournament kicks off on Sun., June 5 at Durty Bull in Durham. To enter the tournament, individuals or teams of up to six people must participate in trivia at one of the 13 participating locations. Teams are encouraged to participate every week to rack up the highest score.

Participants must play at the same place every week so the venue can keep track of the scores. Pick your favorite spot, perhaps based on the venue’s location, food, drinks, or competition (remember to be strategic).

The top three teams from each location with the highest cumulative scores will face off in the championship.

Did your team have a bad week? Don’t worry — the lowest score will be dropped. Plus, there will still be winners for each individual trivia game.

The championship

On Sat., Aug. 27, the three highest-scoring teams from each location will compete in the final round at Durty Bull. Spectators are welcome.

The finale will be more than double the size of a typical Hammered Trivia night. Plus, the questions will be more difficult and the rules will be slightly different to ensure the integrity of the game. Think: Pen and paper + no phones.

The prizes

The first place team will take home $1,000 (and a ton of bragging rights). The second place team will win $500 and third place wins $250. That will definitely cover your trivia drinks for a while.

Tips

Every week, players can expect the following round categories:

  • General knowledge
  • Pictures (think movie posters + corporate logos)
  • Music (identify the title + artist)
  • Current Events
  • Bonus rounds (topics vary)

“You don’t need to have the smartest players on your team; you need to have the most well-rounded team,” Hammered Trivia founder Thor Dollar told RALtoday. “You never know what will be in the bonus rounds. That’s where things get interesting.”
