The Brentwood Road post office has been renamed in honor of Raleigh native + veteran Millie Dunn Veasey. Veasey was one of the 855 women in the all-Black and all-female 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion. The unit was the only one of its kind to operate overseas during World War II.

The 6888th battalion, also known as the Six Triple Eight, played a pivotal role during World War II, sorting 17 million pieces of mail for American soldiers fighting the war in less than 90 days. Prior to the Six Triple Eight arriving in Europe, the backlog of mail spanned over three years. Many say the women’s efforts boosted the morale of hundreds of thousands of soldiers and their families.

Fun Fact: If you’re interested in learning more about the work + efforts completed by Veasey and the rest of her unit, watch “The Six Triple Eight” on Netflix.
