We know some of you got started a little early, Raleigh — but today is officially Mardi Gras, from the French, translated literally as “Fat Tuesday,” because technically we’re all allowed to eat and imbibe whatever we want before (for those who observe) the Lenten fast begins.

DYK? Mardi Gras was historically an ancient Roman festival which took place in mid-February honoring the deities Lupercalia and Saturnalia. When Christians arrived in Rome, they incorporated the festival into Lenten preparations, and now Fat Tuesday is the last day of Carnival before Ash Wednesday.

AKA: The holiday is also known as Shrove Tuesday or Pancake Tuesday.

VS: Mobile, Alabama and New Orleans, Louisiana are the two cities who claim the earliest Mardi Gras celebration in America — although a definitive winner has not been established, both cities are well-known for lavish balls, elaborate parades + raucous parties held today.

TFW: It’s traditional to share a King Cake with friends in honor of the day. A small plastic baby, bean, or other trinket is typically cooked into the batter and whoever finds it will be crowned King or Queen of Carnival.
