A new biz touted as Raleigh’s next third space is coming to Fayetteville Street in a historic building, and it’ll serve up coffee, pre-owned media, and a place to linger when The Newsagent’s opens this summer

Inspired by classic newsstands with a modern shopping experience, The Newsagent’s will sell second-hand and vintage media, including comics, collectibles, and books, which you’ll be able to enjoy with an in-house coffee bar. Plus, expect events like readings, lectures, screenings, and local meetups. We might have found a new local third place to hang out at.

The Newsagent’s is owned by married couple + first time business owners, Neetzan Zimmerman and Yulia Shamis. Did you know? The store will be in the Mahler Building, 228 Fayetteville St., which was recognized by the National Register of Historic Places in 2000, meaning the Renaissance Revival-style building isn’t going anywhere anytime soon.

News Notes

Sports

In the WNBA Draft, Saniya Rivers was drafted No. 8 to the Connecticut Sun, and Aziaha James went No. 12 to the Dallas Wings. The Wolfpack was the only team with two first round picks, and Rivers is the highest drafted NC State player ever for the league. (Yahoo Sports)

Today Is

Tax Day — but this year, NC residents have until Thursday, May 1 to file. However, taxes may be met with interest if not paid by the end of the day. Due to Hurricane Helene and Tropical Storm Debby, all 100 NC counties were granted an extension, but those living in “non-disaster” counties will be charged some interest. (The News & Observer)

Development

Speaking of women’s sports, NC Courage owner Steve Malik wants a new arena for the team, and he’s eyeing downtown. Kane Realty’s Downtown South development was previously envisioned with a stadium, but the project is still on pause. Mayor Janet Cowell told Triangle Business Journal there have been conversations about a downtown stadium. (Triangle Business Journal)

Real Estate

The Triangle’s biggest home purchases recently were by a Hurricanes player and CEOs. In 2024, only 10 homes sold for over $4.5 million in Raleigh, and five were beyond 540 in Shadow Creek Estates. See the full list. (Triangle Business Journal)

History

A new report by the City of Raleigh details historic sites for the LGBTQ+ community and will be presented to city council for potential historic landmark status. Potential landmarks include The Rialto, Legends Nightclub, and the Sir Walter Raleigh Hotel, among others. (INDY Week)

Coming Soon

Capital Boulevard runs on Dunkin’. Two new locations of the national donut and coffee store will open along Capital, one near bowling alley Stars and Strikes, and another near Capital Crossing, with each set to open this fall. Do you think Raleighite + TikToker Grandma C will be a fan? (The News & Observer)

The Carolina Hurricanes are headed to the Stanley Cup Playoffs for the seventh year in a row and will face the New Jersey Devils in the first round. Here’s what to know before puck drop.

The Canes have home ice advantage over the Devils and will host games 1 and 2 and potential games 5 and 7 at the Lenovo Center starting as early as this Saturday, April 19. Grab tickets now. The Canes are 2-2-0 against Jersey this season, and betting sites favor the Canes.

Stanley Cup Playoff games are best-of-seven, and the first team to four wins advances to the next round, which would be against either the Washington Capitals and the NHL’s top scorer of all time, Alex Ovechkin, or the Montreal Canadiens.

The Wrap

A picture of Allie Remhof with her name next to it.
This weekend, I went to one of my favorite places — McKay’s, a second-hand media store with five locations across NC and Tennessee. The closest is a new store in Mebane, and I had to stop in when I went to Nashville a few years ago, too.

It’s totally worth the drive if you’re a movie, music, and book lover like me — and there’s lots of well-priced tech, cameras, and music equipment, too. The Newsagent’s might give McKay’s a run for its money.
