News Notes

Holiday

Tomorrow is Groundhog Day, when Punxsutawney Phil will emerge and predict whether or not we’ll see an early spring. If you don’t trust Phil’s judgement, feel free to consult our seasonal weather forecast through the end of February.

Number

$57,200. That’s the median annual pay in North Carolina (as of December 2024). Compare that to the median household income in Wake County — $96,734. (ADP Pay Insights)

Eat

Pricey avocado toast isn’t looking so bad these days. Egg prices are expected to increase ~20% in 2025 due to a strain of avian flu and inflation, according to the US Department of Agriculture. Try grabbing eggs at a local market instead of the supermarket, where prices are at record or near-record highs. (CNN)

Outdoors

It will soon cost $15,000 to climb Mount Everest when Nepal raises its permit fee by over 35% in September. Or you could hike one of our perfectly good trails right here in Raleigh. (Reuters)

Drink

Costco is going back to Coke. After switching to Pepsi in 2013, Costco will flip-flop back to Coca-Cola products in its food courts this summer. But which do you drink? Let us know. (USA Today)

Kids, this is the story of how I met your mother, and it was all thanks to RALtoday.

OK, maybe that’s not exactly how the 2000s sitcom went, but if Ted Mosby had consulted us for date night ideas, we could’ve shaved the show down to two seasons.

Regardless, whether you’ve met “the one” or are hoping to impress someone, we’ve got 40+ local date night ideas.

For the ones who want a night out on the town

  • Keep your hands busy and the conversation active with workshops ranging from wood burning to pasta classes at Joy Worthy Co.

If the way to their heart is through their stomach

  • Order some unique pastas to “Lady and the Tramp” and try the community table for a communal dining experience at one of Raleigh’s hottest spots + a 2025 James Beard semifinalist — Figulina.

If you’re really hoping that it works out

  • Play a friendly game of pickleball at Pin Point, the latest facility in the city, at one of its 16 indoor courts.

City Guides are presented by Coastal Credit Union.
