Low-cost ways to exercise in Raleigh

Some of the best fun happens on wheels. | Photo by the City of Raleigh
While Raleigh has no shortage of yoga and exercise studios to choose from, not all exercise has to come at a price. Here’s our guide to getting your workout in while spending little to nothing.

Get outdoors

Whether you’re a walker, runner, cyclist, or an all-around outdoors enthusiast, Raleigh is a great place to explore. Triangle parks are beloved among hikers, runners, and bikers alike.

With dozens of parks in Raleigh to choose from, each offers a variety of activities to get you going. For some quick pick-up basketball, visit Lions Park, or take a stroll with views on the 2.8-mile loop of Lake Lynn Park.

Join the club

If you’re looking to merge exercise and community, the Oak City has plenty of opportunities. Have some two-wheel fun with Oaks & Spokes, a Raleigh nonprofit uplifting the local cycling community with a mission to get Raleigh rolling.

If you prefer to hit the ground running, try pounding the pavement with Raleigh Trail Runners. This local group combines running with socializing throughout the Triangle. Plus meetings are six times a week, making it easy to catch up with them.

Take a class

Keep exercise low stakes by merging fun, movement, and connection with a class. Classes provide the opportunity to not only exercise, but also try something new.

Chavis Community Center, as well as other Raleigh Parks locations, offer classes like Zumba, line dancing, and more starting at $5. Plus, local studios like Oak City Yoga offers newbies two weeks of unlimited classes for $20.

Sodabox expands to the Lenovo Center

Sodabox, a family-owned “dirty” soda business founded in the Triangle, is growing. The soda joint is taking things up another notch with the addition of two more locations inside of the Lenovo Center in the East and West Priority Lounges on level 100. That’s right, starting this Friday, Oct. 11, event goers will have a new concession twist — just in time for the Canes’ opening game.

The bev destination has opened six locations in Raleigh, Apex, Cary, Garner, and Rolesville in just two years. Sodabox is known for its specialty dirty sodas which add various flavored syrups and inclusions, like Blue Curacao and vanilla. Its menu ranges from seltzers and lemonades to small bites.

City Editor Danyale here. When I ran into owner Scott Sorensen while getting my usual What’s Up Doc with cream, he said he was excited for the brand’s continuous growth.

From the editor
As I head on vacation soon, I cannot help but to anticipate the warm weather and much needed pause. I’m also a little stumped that the summer went by so quickly and I didn’t get to explore more of the amazing places near Raleigh.
