Meteorologists across the country are watching a significant winter storm that might impact Raleigh this weekend. Here’s what we know so far and how to prepare.

What we know

As of Tuesday afternoon, an active storm pattern from the gulf coast is set to move into NC at the same time as a cold front from the north, and they could potentially combine for wintery precipitation. “It’s too early to say how much, but this is probably going to be a big impact event the second half of Saturday and Sunday for all of central North Carolina,” CBS 17 chief meteorologist Wes Hohenstein told RALtoday.

Meteorologists at CBS 17 and WRAL are asking residents to take computer-generated forecasts with a grain of salt. Right now, meteorologists are focused on whether the storm will hit.

“What is certain is we’ve gone another 24 hours, and it is still looking like an event’s going to unfold that brings some winter weather and going to impact the area,” Hohenstein told RALtoday. “So we’re more confident today, and it’s looking more likely today that we’re going to have ice and snow issues as we head into the weekend.”

How to prepare

  • Stay up to date with a local weather team. And sorry, no one at RALtoday has a meteorology degree, but we’ll still keep you in the loop.
  • Reconsider weekend plans, including those with lots of travel. Frozen precipitation combined with ice-cold roads means snow and ice will most likely stick.
  • Stay inside and off the roads. Take the time to watch a movie, read a book, or tune in to some sports.
  • Prepare for power outages with batteries, candles, flashlights, and wood for your fireplace.
  • Find more winter weather tips from the State of North Carolina and the City of Raleigh.
