Meet new friends on an active adult trip

The City of Raleigh has an active adults program that offers planned day and overnight trips geared toward adults ages 50 and older.

Reader Erica M. recently reached out with a heartfelt request: “I am a newish relocated older person. Although I find most everything age-available, I do wonder if there are some places, events, and activities that would be good to-dos as a way of meeting more age-like-me 70 year olds.” And we are here to share some good news, Erica.

Did you know the City of Raleigh has an active adults program? This initiative offers planned trips, near and far, geared toward adults ages 50 and older.

The group recently traveled to the Canadian Rockies and Glacier National Park for a seven day excursion. If you don’t want to stray too far from home, there are two upcoming day trips planned, and three more to plan ahead for.

Swan Creek Winery Trail | Thursday, Sept. 7 | $140 for Raleigh residents, $155 for non-residents | Learn how wine is made at three different wineries in the Brushy Mountains.

Sylvan Heights Bird Park | Thursday, Sept. 21 | 7:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. | $96 for Raleigh residents, $111 for non-residents | Calling all bird watchers. Observe over 2,000 waterfowl, parrots, toucans, flamingos, and other exotic birds from around the world.

Plan ahead for these activities:

  • Haunted tour | October | Trip registration coming soon | Enjoy spooky historical stories about the City of Oaks.
  • Honor Our Veterans | November | Trip registration coming soon | Take a trip to Fayetteville to visit the US Army Airborne and Special Operations Museum and Museum of the Cape Fear.
  • Winery, Dinner, and Show | December | Trip registration coming soon | Travel to Duplin Winery for a Down Home County Holiday Show to sing along to holiday tunes and nosh on a festive dinner with friends.

Before signing up, participants must complete a yearly trip registration form. And if none of these suit your fancy, there are plenty more activities and resources for the 50+ community in the City of Oaks.
