Did you know Raleigh was home to one of the most prolific female inventors ever? Born in Raleigh in 1887, Beulah Louise Henry is credited with 100+ inventions and 49 US patents during her lifetime and was known as “Lady Edison.”

Throughout the 1920s, Henry’s many inventions were to improve women’s quality of life. Henry did all of this without an engineering degree and told the New York Times in 1962, “If necessity is the mother of invention, then resourcefulness is the father.”

Henry was inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame in 2006 alongside famed innovators like the Wright brothers, Alexander Graham Bell, and Steve Jobs. Henry is remembered among the greats in Raleigh history — so where’s her statue?

Post of the Day

🐢 G’day, mates

What the shell? These two pink-bellied sideneck turtles — aptly named Donatella and Michelanga — are Wake County SPCA’s first turtles in 15 years, and they could be yours for the next 30 to 50 years. We’re hearing they’re fans of pizza, sewers, and ninjutsu.

This breed of aquatic turtle hails from Australia, and Donatella and Michelangela were donated to the SPCA after being picked on by a third turtle at home. Wake SPCA has a host of non-cats and dogs up for adoption, including guinea pigs, gerbils, and a pair of birds named Speed and Racer.

The Wrap

More music from me — I grabbed tickets to see Bleachers at Red Hat Amphitheater with opener This is Lorelai, who I became obsessed with after Hopscotch 2025. Plus, I think this will be one of the last shows in the current amphitheater before it moves next door.
