News Notes

Opening

New lunch option dropping soon. Roots Natural Kitchen is opening its doors on Hillsborough Street later this month. Founded in 2015, the Virginia-based chain now has 20+ locations across multiple states, and is popular for its customizable salad and grain bowls. You can sample the goods starting Monday, Feb. 16. (News & Observer)

History

Be sure to check our events calendar for the Black History Month happenings around Raleigh over the coming weeks. This weekend, we’ve got our eyes on “Harmonies of Heritage”, a touching live music event featuring local musicians + singers.

Closing

Bahama Breeze is closing its tropical-themed Raleigh restaurant in April. The 3309 Wake Forest Dr. spot is one of 14 upcoming closures for the chain, and its parent company plans to turn it into one of its other brands. That means it could become an Olive Garden. (Triangle Business Journal)

Number

50 minutes. That’s how much extra daylight Raleigh will gain by the end of February. As the days get longer, we suggest soaking up the afternoon sun on a local restaurant’s patio with a beverage in hand. (AccuWeather)

Sports

The Super Bowl hasn’t even kicked off, and the NFL is already looking ahead to next season. Later this year, the league will host a game in Paris for the first time in its history. We hear it’s beautiful in the fall — find out for yourself with a flight from RDU.

Giveaway

Speaking of the Super Bowl, if you’re among the expected hordes of folks calling out from work on Monday, Feb. 9, you may be interested in a free acai bowl from Clean Juice. Head down to get a free Berry Acai Bowl to get some goodness into your system.

Arts

Nominations are open for the 2026 Raleigh Medal of Arts — the city’s highest honor in the arts. There have been 183 recipients of the awards since its inception in 1984, including performers, organizations, and artistic leaders. The checklist has more info.

The Wrap

Hi folks. I’ll be stepping in for the next few Raleigh newsletters while Allie is out of office. She’ll be back soon, don’t worry.

In the meantime, I recommend a warm bowl of soup while the cold lingers. Summer will be back soon, don’t worry.
