Meteorologists across the country are watching a significant winter storm that might impact Raleigh this weekend. Here’s what we know so far and how to prepare.

As of Tuesday afternoon, an active storm pattern from the Gulf Coast is expected to move into NC just as a cold front arrives from the north, and the two could potentially combine for wintery precipitation. “It’s too early to say how much, but this is probably going to be a big impact event the second half of Saturday and Sunday for all of central North Carolina,” CBS 17 chief meteorologist Wes Hohenstein told RALtoday.

“What is certain is we’ve gone another 24 hours, and it is still looking like an event’s going to unfold that brings some winter weather and is going to impact the area,” Hohenstein told RALtoday.

The lifesaving power of a simple act

A simple act. A powerful impact. Local lives depend on it. | Photos provided by The Blood Connection
Did you know? January is National Blood Donor Month, a time to recognize the everyday heroes who help save lives with a simple, selfless act: donating blood. At The Blood Connection (TBC), this month is dedicated to thanking donors and highlighting the critical role they play in supporting patients at local hospitals.

Winter can be one of the most challenging times to maintain a stable blood supply. Between holiday travel, seasonal illnesses, and unpredictable weather, donations often decline — yet the need for blood never slows down. Emergency procedures, cancer treatments, and chronic conditions rely on a consistent supply, no matter the season.

Thanks to generous donors, TBC continues to serve communities across the region and ensure hospitals have the blood they need when it matters most. Whether you’re a longtime donor or considering your first appointment, National Blood Donor Month is a powerful reminder: one donation can make a lasting difference.

Although the storm still isn’t guaranteed to hit Raleigh, here are some easy tips ahead of the potentially snowy weekend.
  • Stay up to date with a local weather team. And sorry, no one at RALtoday has a meteorology degree, but we’ll still keep you in the loop.
  • Reconsider weekend plans, including those with lots of travel. Frozen precipitation combined with ice-cold roads means snow and ice will most likely stick.
  • Stay inside and off the roads. Take the time to watch a movie, read a locally written book, or tune in to a Saturday Canes game or the NFL playoffs.
  • Prepare for power outages with batteries, candles, flashlights, and wood for your fireplace.
  • Find more winter weather tips from the State of North Carolina and the City of Raleigh.
