A message from our team

It’s 6AM somewhere — in fact, if you’re reading this at 9 a.m. local time, it’s 6 a.m. in our sister market SEAtoday. Which brings us to our main point: Did you know there are newsletters just like MKTtoday across the country, providing the same need-to-know local news and events for their communities?

From sharing live music venues in Portland, OR to reporting on new developments in Greenville, SC, our company works hard to be local, everywhere. Support our mission.

After closing in March, 42nd Street Oyster Bar will reopen in February with a new ownership group, including longtime general manager, Hunter Correll. According to Raleigh Magazine, Correll purchased the property outright from landlord John F. Holmes Jr. Rumors started swirling this past August after sources hinted at a reopening.

Originally opened in the 1930s, The Angus Barn’s Thad Eure Jr. officially launched the restaurant in 1987. Correll has been with the oyster bar since 1996 and is now part of the new business entity 42nd Street Partners LLC, which was formed in June.

If you have your own 42nd Street story you’d like to share, fill out our online form below or reply to this email, and you might see your story in a future edition of RALtoday. We can’t wait to be shucking again soon.

News Notes

History

Historic Yates Mill County Park’s watermill is back in action with a new wheel, and you can visit it this Saturday at a community open house. As the last operable water-powered gristmill in Wake County, it’s a local treasure — and the community raised over half the funds for a new wheel.

Number

For every $1 invested in the Free Parking Pilot Program downtown, $7.65 is generated in economic impact through local spending. According to the Downtown Raleigh Alliance, this program has already generated an estimated $3.8 million in annual economic benefit for DTR, and city council just voted to extend it through June 2026.

Closed

A’Verde Cocina in Cary has closed after financial struggles. Chef Katsuji Tanabe opened the spot in 2022 with Mexican + Japanese fusion dishes, but you can still find his flavors at Flour & Barrel, Bittersweet, and La Taqueria at Boxyard RTP. (Triangle Business Journal)

Last week, the Washington Post named Dorothea Dix Park one of eight US city parks worth a trip alongside other urban greenspaces like Griffith Park in Los Angeles, Lincoln Park in Chicago, and Little Island in New York.

The Washington Post highlighted Dix for its 308 acres of fun, including the iconic new trolls, skyline views from the Big Field, and of course, Gipson Play Plaza. Here’s why we think Dix Park is the best.
