Ripken, who served as the Durham Bulls’ bat dog for four seasons and fetched kicking tees for NC State football, died unexpectedly last week. A new peer-run respite house in North Raleigh offers a voluntary alternative to psychiatric hospitalization. The home-like facility, run by Promise Resource Network, provides up to 10 nights of support from peer specialists for individuals in mental distress.
