Looking for an effective way to fast-track your child’s education (without paying for pricey private schools?)

Applications are currently open for Wake County’s award-winning Magnet School Programs — offering free, public education programs with a focus on a wide range of subjects + disciplines, from STEM and the arts to global studies and language immersion.

Best of all, they’re open to all students in Wake County K-12 — no fees, entry tests, or auditions required.

Here’s how to get your child enrolled:

Step one: Explore your options

The current Magnet Application Period is open now through Thursday, Jan. 23, 2025. During this time, parents and prospective students are encouraged to:
In short, this window is your chance to see if your child would benefit from these specialized programs.

Step two: Select your preferred programs

Once you feel you’ve found a fit, all that’s left is submitting your application.

Wake County has streamlined the process for parents in a major way, and you can apply for multiple programs — all from the comfort of your couch.

Here’s what that looks like:
Prop tip: If your family is new to WCPSS, you’ll need to enroll first to receive your student ID number.

Step three: See where you’ve been accepted

Once the application is submitted, all that’s left is to view your child’s placement in a program.

That info will be released on Saturday, Feb. 22, via the same portal you submitted your application. Ready to get started?

❄️ Snow place like home

Raise your hand if you remember Raleigh’s great snowfall of 2000.

ICYMI (or were just a wee snowflake at the time), here’s what happened: On January 25, Raleighites woke up to an all time record-busting snowstorm — which lasted the whole day, accumulating 20.3 inches of powdery snow in total.

Here are some more snowtable facts about the Triangle’s winter weather:

❄️ The latest snowfall:

  • Raleigh’s last measurable snowfall was on Jan. 29, 2022, and next month could mark three years without snow. Raleigh’s longest snow drought was 1,164 days, ending in ’93 — fingers crossed for snow before April 7, 2025.
  • The most common spring day for snowfall in our city is March 12 with three different recordings.
And before you start Instacarting the milk, bread, and eggs this year, know that this winter’s forecast doesn’t call for much snow at all in the Triangle — but that doesn’t mean we won’t wish for snow days anyway.

Duke will play Ole Miss in Jacksonville, Florida on Thursday, Jan. 2 in the TaxSlayer Gator Bowl, UNC will face off against the UConn Huskies at Fenway Park in the Wasabi Fenway Bowl on Saturday, Dec. 28, and NC State will play fellow NC team ECU at the Go Bowling Military Bowl in Annapolis, Maryland also on Dec. 28.

While we won’t be able to report in while out for our winter break, just know we’re always backing our local teams.
