Museums to explore and learn from in Raleigh

Museums are the cultural hubs of Raleigh — we’re known as the Smithsonian of the South, and for good reason. Whether you’re looking to learn something new about the City of Oaks or plotting a way to spend your Saturday afternoon, here are 17 museums to visit in our city.

History

City of Raleigh Museum, 220 Fayetteville St. | Free | The City of Raleigh Museum preserves the capital city’s unique history. Exhibits include a general history of Raleigh and an overview of the local political scene, as well as ever-changing galleries.

Historic Oak View County Park, 4028 Carya Dr. | Free | Interact with farm animals and learn about the historical significance of this 19th-century farmstead, which transitioned from a plantation to sharecropper and tenant farming.

NC Museum of History, 5 E. Edenton St. | Free | The NC Museum of History is closed for renovations until at least 2026. From the pirate Blackbeard visiting NC to the flight of the Wright Flyer and Michael Jordan’s rise to fame in the ‘90s, there is something for everyone to explore.

Science

NC Museum of Natural Sciences, 11 W. Jones St. | Free | This is the largest science museum in the Southeast and oldest established museum in NC. Check out larger-than-life dinosaur fossils and learn about everything the Earth has to offer. Pro tip: Be sure to try the Dueling Dinosaurs exhibit, a a live paleontology project.

Arts

Guests view contemporary art.

CAM is a unique contemporary art museum with plenty of businesses in walking distance.

CAM Raleigh, 409 W. Martin St. | Free | This contemporary art museum in downtown’s warehouse district has an ever-changing gallery of thought-provoking art.

Gregg Museum of Art & Design, 1903 Hillsborough St. | Free | This art museum on NC State’s campus boasts 35,000 pieces in its permanent collection. Also, don’t miss the largest collection of outsider art in NC.

Concert
  • If I die in Raleigh, at least I will die free. Old Crow Medicine Show, the band behind the hit “Wagon Wheel,” is performing at Music for the Mountains at Red Hat Amphitheater on Sunday, Oct. 27. Tickets proceeds go to The Community Foundation of Western North Carolina. Grab your tickets.

  • Wake County Public Health Center is hosting weekly walk-in clinics for flu and COVID-19 vaccines. Patients can stop in from 1–5 p.m. every Wednesday through Nov. 20.
Older Adults
  • Pack your bags — Raleigh Parks’ Active Adult Program is offering unique travel experiences for 2025. Destinations include Alaska, Utah’s National Parks, and highlights of the Columbia and Snake River in the Pacific Northwest.
Opening
  • BK Pilates, a Brooklyn-based reformer Pilates studio, is opening at Rockway Raleigh in early 2025. This is the second tenant announced for downtown’s Rockway development, with the first being Benchwarmers Bagels.

  • The City of Raleigh Museum is hosting true crime walking tours on Thursday, Oct. 24 + Friday, Oct. 25. Learn haunting tales of the city through performances by local actors. General admission starts at $20.
Community
  • The Raleigh Veterans Day Parade in November is canceled for the second year in a row due to a parade vehicle ban. Instead, there will be a ceremony and 21-gun salute near the State Capitol. (ABC 11)

  • Indigenous Peoples’ Day. Proclaimed in 2017 by Gov. Roy Cooper as an observed holiday in NC, this national holiday honors the past, present, and futures of Native people across the US.

🎃 A pumpkin party

Don’t miss the Pumpkin Flotilla in Cary, NC

It’s that time of year again — get ready to set sail to your jack-o’-lanterns and watch them light up the water. The Pumpkin Flotilla at the Bond Park Boathouse (801 High House Rd., Cary) is Friday, Oct. 25 from 4-7 p.m.

Planning to participate? Be sure to drop off your pumpkin creation on Thursday, Oct. 24 from 4-6 p.m. Floats are available on a first come, first served basis, so try to arrive as early as possible. If you need a pumpkin — use our guide to pumpkin picking.

The event will also feature live music and food trucks. Plus, boat rentals will be available. Pro tip: Bring a blanket or chair so you can sit on the edge of the lake and watch the lit-up pumpkins float by.

Can’t make the pumpkin send off? The jack-o'-lanterns are typically left floating on the lake and re-lit the following nights.
