We’re remembering the hottest day in Raleigh like it was yesterday. | Photo by RALtoday
There’s no getting around it: It’shot, Raleigh.
In the true spirit of summer bliss, we can’t help but to reminisce on the hottest day we’ve had here in Raleigh and looking forward to the warm days ahead.
The day the heat set records
Raleigh’s hottest day on record took place when temperatures hit a record-breaking 106°.
That sure puts this weather in perspective, huh? The closest we’ve come to that temperature in the past few weeks was when temps got to 97° on Thursday, Aug. 29.
What the headlines said
So, what else was going on in Raleigh on the hottest day on record? Looking back, the city’s biggest news was the Press opening at 400H and three international flights — Frankfurt, Panama, and Mexico City — added to RDU’s lineup.
The News & Observer also covered the intense weather we were having at the time, saying, “Temperatures that extreme could bring significant increases in heat-related illnesses.”
How to weather the weather today
OK, so we’re not breaking records (yet), but that doesn’t mean braving this weather is easy. Thankfully, we have 17 museums to explore indoors, water parks + beaches to keep you cool, and cool treats to indulge in.
Pay-What-You-Can Farmstand | Wednesday, Sept. 4 | 4-7 p.m. | Raleigh City Farm | Pay what you can | Fill up your reusable bag with local produce like basil, cabbage, herbs, tomatoes, and more.
Herb Your Enthusiasm Floral Design Class | Wednesday, Sept. 4 | 6:30-8 p.m. | The Florapist at Cornerstone Clubhouse | $65 | Create a personal herb haven filled with rosemary, mint and herbs combined with NC farm flowers.
Labor Day — an annual federal holiday, first designated in 1894, that honors the contributions of workers in America. Take part in celebrating by taking a hike or eating on some of Raleigh’s many patios.
Plan Ahead
Labor Day arrives with NC still in summer mode. Local ABC stores in Wake, Durham, and other counties will be closed today, but beer and wine are available at grocery and convenience stores. Many grocery stores will be open, though some may close early. (The News & Observer)
Tech
A South Carolina tech firm is pitching its Pursuit Alert app to NC law enforcement. The app warns drivers about nearby high-speed chases, aiming to reduce traffic-related deaths. Already in talks with state agencies, the app features alerts on pursuits, their locations, and prompts to move over. (WUNC)
Regional
State regulators approved Duke Energy’s rate adjustment, effective Wednesday, January 1, 2025, due to lower fuel costs. Duke Energy Carolinas customers will see a bill decrease of about $5 (3.6%), with commercial rates dropping by 7.4%. (WUNC)
For the past two weeks, I’ve been getting up early to walk for at least 30 minutes. Usually, I walk around my neighborhood, but since it’s Labor Day, I can get out of my norm and hit up a trail. My current fave is NC Museum of Art Park.
