Last week, we asked for your recommendations for third places and so many of our Raleighites came through with suggestions. City Editors Allie + Danyale are sharing their third places and some of the recommendations submitted.
What’s a third place?
Ray Oldenburg, a sociologist who wrote about third places in his book, “The Great Good Place” shares that third places — public, informal gathering spaces that you frequent in your community (think: coffee shops, parks, libraries, churches, breweries, bookstores, salons... etc.) — are important for many reasons, but particularly for promoting social vitality + a sense of community.

Third places in Raleigh — editors’ picks
City Editor Danyale here. A third place I’ve grown to love and cherish is CAM Raleigh. When I imagine the all of the art and creative people who also frequent the space, I feel a sense of home. When I browse through the exhibitions I’m often consumed with the beauty, and I’m inspired in my own writing.
City Editor Allie here. You already know you can find me at my neighborhood watering hole Gussie’s (and Left Hook Coffee). Besides great food and drinks, what keeps me coming back is the service and top-notch hospitality and community vibe.
Take a peek at our first round: Cheesy savory animal fries, Brussels sprouts, and a couple cocktails to split.

5 Restaurants in Raleigh incorporating locally sourced ingredients
A peak of Crawford and Son’s grilled beef short rib. | Crawford and Son
It’s settled. Out of all the reader responses submitted, 37% of Raleighites decided that among the list of Oak City spots incorporating locally sourced ingredients we put together, Crawford and Son will be the first stop.
The local eatery is a casual restaurant located in the historic Oak neighborhood serving up “straightforward, honest food.” What stands out most about this place is that its menu changes frequently depending on what’s in season. Heads up, the next menu change will occur in September.
If you haven’t already, check what other restaurants in Raleigh are serving up delicious bites using farm-to-table and locally sourced ingredients to please your palette.

Hey Raleighites. Allie and I co-worked at the new Biscuit Belly at Seaboard Station on Friday — and we were super impressed. Pro tip: Try the Basic Biscuit or the Chick ‘N Ditch The Waffle.
