Dix Park to welcome troll sculptures

Today, The Dix Park Conservancy unveiled world-class artistic projects coming soon to Dorothea Dix Park, including two troll sculptures by Danish artist Thomas Dambo.

Dambo’s trolls, now nearing 130 across the globe, are made from reclaimed wood. The artist will install one small and one large troll in October 2025 with a team of local carpenters + volunteers. The trolls can range up to 36 feet tall and are usually shrouded by trees.

The conservancy also revealed that it is developing a public poetry project with NC’s Poet Laureate, Jaki Shelton Green. The recently renovated Physician’s House will also soon be home to the Artist in Residence program for NC artists focused on the environment and sustainability.

Other upcoming art installations for Dix Park include local artist Thomas Sayre’s sunflower power poles, pieces from Lamar Whidbee and Mark Reigelman II, and a poem by Johnny Lee Chapman for Gipson Play Plaza.

Additionally, sculptor DeWitt Godfrey recently unveiled “Attun,” made of 80 steel cylinders, alongside the Stone Houses renovation.

Happy Friday, Raleigh — this weekend couldn’t come soon enough. I have been jealous of any city with Dambo’s trolls for a while, so I can’t wait for this new addition to Dix Park.

This weekend, I’m planning on taking in the extra solstice sunlight at as many outdoor bars as possible. First on my list: Gussie’s picnic tables with a pickle cocktail in my hand and animal fries on my plate.
