Juneteenth is a commemorative American holiday that honors June 19, 1865, the day that African Americans were informed of their freedom from enslavement by the late, once enslaved woman, Charlotte Brooks nearly two years after the implementation of the Emancipation Proclamation.
Here are a few events to commemorate in the Triangle.
Black History Trolley Tour | Saturday, June 15 | 11 a.m.-2 p.m. | 1 Mimosa St., Raleigh | Learn about the capital’s Black history centered in historic homes, schools, and more — tickets are available for $10.
Capital City Celebration | Saturday, June 15 | 12-6 p.m. | Dix Park, 693 Palmer Dr., Raleigh | Celebrate by gathering with the community and enjoying entertainment for all ages.

Don’t call it a comeback. After closing two years ago, Southern-style restaurant Red Hot & Blue is returning to the City of Oaks at Quail Corners Shopping Center. The establishment is in development and hopes to have doors open this October. (Triangle Business Journal)

The City of Raleigh has broken ground on the new city hall building, East Civic Tower. The addition will be 17 stories high and will feature state-of-the-art offices, conference rooms, a health center, and an art gallery.

The U.S. Open is an annual national golf championship, and this year it’s being held at the historic Pinehurst No. 2, June 13-16. This year will mark the fourth time Pinehurst has hosted the national championship, and the course will be graced with the likes of top-ranking golfers including Xander Schauffele, Tiger Woods (on a special exemption), Scottie Scheffler, Rory McIlroy, and Collin Morikawa.
Golf lovers and spectators alike have the opportunity to attend the championship. The course is only a less than 90 minute drive, or a short train ride away. Your City Editors, Allie and Danyale, are attending practice rounds today, and we cannot wait to tell you all about it.
