Juneteenth is a commemorative American holiday that honors June 19, 1865, the day that African Americans were informed of their freedom from enslavement by the late, once enslaved woman, Charlotte Brooks nearly two years after the implementation of the Emancipation Proclamation.

Here are a few events to commemorate in the Triangle.

Black History Trolley Tour | Saturday, June 15 | 11 a.m.-2 p.m. | 1 Mimosa St., Raleigh | Learn about the capital’s Black history centered in historic homes, schools, and more — tickets are available for $10.

Capital City Celebration | Saturday, June 15 | 12-6 p.m. | Dix Park, 693 Palmer Dr., Raleigh | Celebrate by gathering with the community and enjoying entertainment for all ages.

Double Dutch Festival | Saturday, June 15 | 12-6 p.m. | Intersection of Fayettville Street and Hargett Street, Raleigh | Jump into the experience of live music, food, vendors, games, and a skate park.

The Joy of House Music and screening of “The Color Purple” (2023) | Saturday, June 15 | 5-11 p.m. | NCMA, Theater in the Museum Park, 2110 Blue Ridge Rd., Raleigh | View the musical adaptation film based on the book by Pulitzer Prize novelist Alice Walker — reserve tickets to attend.

Juneteenth at John Chavis Park | Wednesday, June 19 | All day | 505 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd., Raleigh | The park will have DJs and food trucks throughout the day to celebrate the holiday.

Kickback in the Courtyard | Wednesday, June 19 | 6-9 p.m. | 455 S. Driver St., Durham | Join local food influencer Joy Eats World at Mike D’s BBQ for an evening of food, music, shopping, and community — vegan options will be available.

Legends Gala | Saturday, June 22 | 7-11 p.m. | CAM Raleigh, 409 W. Martin St., Raleigh | Experience this artistically formal event at CAM Raleigh as live music fills your ears and small bites delight your taste buds — tickets are currently on sale for $100.
