We know the question on your mind, Raleighites — when’s it going to get cold? Thanks to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Climate Prediction Center, we know what temperatures and precipitation trends to expect in Raleigh for December, January, and February.
While exact weather conditions typically can’t be predicted more than a week in advance, here’s a seasonal outlook to help you prepare for what winter will bring.
Reminder: The first day of winter is on Thursday, Dec. 21.
Temperature
We could go either way. This winter, Raleigh shows equal chances of above normal, near normal, or below normal temperatures.

Expect slightly more precipitation. Raleigh has a 60-70% chance of seeing below normal/higher than average snow and rainfall amounts this winter.
Drought
Drought conditions are expected to improve this season.
December
Temperatures in December usually fall around 44.9° and don’t typically exceed 56.1° or drop below 34.9°. With a possibility of a wetter winter, this month may see rain, sleet, and snow as you prep for the holidays.
January
In January, Raleighites can expect an average of 41.6° and usually never above 50° or below 36°. January is our coldest month of the year — bet on this month for snow.
February
Temps in this month fall around 45.2° and typically stay in the range of 53.9° to 34.8°. As the weather wanes a tad warmer, plan ahead with some indoor activities to spring into the next season.

Chef Ashley Christensen to close Poole’side Pies

This is your sign to grab your last slice of sausage alla vodka from Poole’side Pies before it’s too late. James Beard Award-winning Chef Ashley Christensen announced that the downtown restaurant will close after service on Saturday, Dec. 23.
But no knead to be sad — the renowned Raleigh restaurateur plans to open a new AC concept in its place in the coming months.
“This was not an easy decision but it’s one we’ve made carefully and in response to our community’s ever-evolving needs,” said Chef Christensen in a newsletter announcement.
This pizza spot, located beside the Raleigh Convention Center, has served inventive slices, fan-favorite apps like the pickle juice Caesar salad, and nostalgic summer vibes since 2019.
Though we will miss this saucy spot, we can’t wait to see what Chef Christensen has up her white jacket sleeve.
