Raleigh is home to six different colleges and universities, and each one will begin its fall semester this month. No matter what school you’re prepping for, here are some local options to shop for books, school supplies, dorm decor, and spirit wear.
School supplies + books
Jerry’s Artarama is a national brand, but is headquartered right here in the City of Oaks. This store specializes in art supplies, but you can grab quality pens and paper for your note-taking needs, or pick out supplies for a paint-based hobby.
Crazy Alan’s Emporium in Chapel Hill is NC’s only independent office supplier and has pens ranging from 20 cents to $2,000.
Check out our guide to local bookstores to help fill your required reading list. Reader’s Corner and Nice Price Books are located right off of NC State’s campus and have plenty of used academic books available at a lower price.
And teachers, don’t forget to stock up at Tools 4 Schools, a free teacher supply store in Cary for Wake County Public School System educators. Another store dedicated to educators is The Teach Me Store, a Raleigh women-owned supply shop in operation since 1991.
Dorm decor + spirit wear
Grab some hip, functional, and unique decor from local vendors to give your dorm a homey feel. We recommend Edge of Urge, Deco Raleigh, and The Flourish Market for that local flair.
For Wolfpack students, fans, and fam, The Red and White Shop is a NC State grad-owned store where you can purchase authentic Pack gear. Plus, this store also sells Meredith College merch.

RDU is testing out a system to make parking in its 8,846 spots easier. A digital message board hanging from parking garage ceilings will indicate where and how many spots are available. Currently, this feature is available on one floor of RDU’s parking deck. If successful, the system will be implemented in spring 2024. (The News & Observer)

Take a look at the best bathrooms contenders (and the snubs)
Say hey to Snoop and Martha at Kings Bowling. | Photo by RALtoday
If you have to go, you might as well do it in style. Cintas’ annual America’s Best Restroom contest is back. Cast your vote for the best bathroom in the country by Friday, Aug. 11. But who will take the porcelain throne?
It looks like we got the snub, but we won’t let our city’s best bathroom contenders go to waste. Raleigh is flushed with great restrooms. Here are a few standouts:
Kings Dining & Entertainment | Lock eyes with unexpected celeb besties Martha Stewart and Snoop Dogg before you go.
Poole’side Pies | This playful pizza spot has non-gendered people rooms themed to a day out at the pool complete with pool depth and “no diving” markers.
Wonderland | Fit for Alice, Barbie, and pink-loving Raleighites, this bathroom is decked out with tiger wallpaper, and plenty of pink to match the rest of this eclectic restaurant.
Who will take the throne? Send us your bathroom contenders using the button below.
Last night, we visited the new Andia’s Ice Cream location at Raleigh Iron Works for a sneak preview, and y’all, somehow the ice cream tasted even better. I love the store in Cary, and I am so pumped for this new spot in a bustling part of Raleigh.
