An unnamed source told WRAL earlier this week that Meta Platforms, Inc. — the parent company of Facebook and Instagram — is planning to establish a “significant presence” in Durham.

Local job listings for the huge tech company’s new offices are already live on LinkedIn. However, details about where the company will set up shop and how many people it will employ are not yet available.

“We have nothing to share regarding any plans in the Research Triangle at this time,” Meta spokesperson Jamila Reeves told RALtoday in an email.

“The Durham economic development community is never surprised to hear that both large and small businesses in growing sectors are considering growing here,” Geoff Durham, President and CEO of the Durham Chamber of Commerce, told RALtoday. “Upon any official announcements we will look forward to working with them as we do our many existing partners.”

What’s the metaverse?

Meta (formerly Facebook, Inc.) is developing new technologies like virtual reality, augmented reality, and smart glasses to help build a social metaverse.

The metaverse is what many tech companies call “the future of the internet.” It will use 3D spaces to allow people to socialize, learn, collaborate, and play with others.

We’ll let Mark Zuckerberg — the co-founder and CEO of Meta Platforms — explain in this video.

Inside a Meta office

We couldn’t help but notice that Meta has some pretty futuristic offices around the world. Although we don’t know what the Durham offices will look like, we hope the design will take inspiration from spaces like those in California, Texas, and New York.
