This time last year, our region made national headlines for what would later become known as Pollenpocalypse .
The photo above was taken in Durham on Monday, April 08, 2019 when pollen was at peak levels in the Triangle. The NC Department of Environmental Quality recorded 1,778.8 grains of pollen per cubic meter of air that day, which is considered “very high.” On April 11, 2019 , however, Raleigh and Durham had the highest levels of pollen combined with 3,524 grains of pollen per cubic meter of air. This past week , Raleigh seemed to be headed for a repeat of Pollenpocalypse — with 1,728 grains per cubic meter of air recorded on Monday, April 06 + “very high” levels of pollen are predicted for this weekend . What kind of pollen is it? As allergy sufferers we wanted to know, and it turns out that most of what you see floating through the air or clinging to your cars comes from oak, pine, willow, poplar, sweet gum + cedar trees. 🌳
