Bee Downtown began in 2015 as 3 hives on the roof of the Burt’s Bees HQ in Durham. After 6 years, the buzz-worthy business announced it will be expanding out of state — with hives planned for Charlotte, Richmond, VA, Washington, DC + Tampa, FL.

Bees are dying rapidly. According to The Bee Informed Partnership, US beekeepers lost 43.7% of their honey bees from 2019-2020. Bee Downtown aims to make a difference by rebuilding healthy honeybee populations. Through its corporate hive program, local businesses are able to sponsor hives — thus creating new homes for thousands of bees. (Hives can be kept at the businesses themselves or in community apiaries).

Thanks to Bee Downtown, there are now more than 100 corporate hives across the Triangle, including at Delta Air Lines, AT&T, Met-Life, and Cisco.

Recently, Bee Downtown installed hives on top of Kane Realty-owned buildings in North Hills. While Bee Downtown maintains the hives, sponsors get to learn more about the inner-workings of the hives and the environmental + economic impact that pollinators have on the environment.
