Get your binoculars ready, Raleigh. The 27th Great Backyard Bird Count is this Fri., Feb. 16 to Mon., Feb. 19. You read that right — this is a bird counting event that stretches across the globe, spreading its wings to Raleigh. During the NC Bird Count, organizations around the state will collaborate to observe + collect data on our local avian friends.
What is it?
For four days, people of all ages from around the world will connect with nature by watching, learning about, counting + celebrating birds. The Great Backyard Bird Count was the first online community science project to collect data on wild birds and display nearly real-time results.
Why does it matter?
The information gathered helps with the study of bird habitats + annual migration patterns, helping with bird conservation. Bird counting helps experts understand global bird populations and how they are doing in different regions.
How to participate
All you have to do is go outside and observe. It can be anywhere, from a spot in your backyard to your favorite nature preserve. You can watch for one day or all four days, for as little as 15 minutes. Count all of the birds you see or hear, using one of the following tools:
- First time counter: Merlin Bird ID app
- Seasoned counter: eBird Mobile app or eBird website
Pro tip: Remember to take photos + check out these instructions for group counting.
