During the Day of the Dead (Día de los Muertos), deceased family members and friends are honored with food, drink, and festivities. The holiday, which originated in Mexico and traditionally takes place from Oct. 31-Nov. 2, is a celebration of life and death.

Take part in the annual tradition during the 10th Day of the Dead 5K this Sat., Oct. 29. The downtown race, hosted by Centro Mexican Restaurant , benefits the Brentwood Boys & Girls Club . After the run (check out the course map ), grab a special Day of the Dead beer by Trophy Brewing and enjoy the street party, featuring an art corner and face painting. There will also be a costume contest dance-off.

Two altars — one at Oakwood Cemetery and another on Wilmington Street — will be set up for people to leave offerings of flowers and written messages in memory of their loved ones.
