What better way to close out the year than opening your doors to Raleighites?

For one day only this Wed., Dec. 15, The Mecca — located at 13 E. Martin St. — will reopen its doors from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. to serve favorites from the breakfast + lunch menu. Yes, you can find the Lemon Herb Chicken on the one-day lunch menu. 🍽️

What you need to know

  • Breakfast will be served from 8-11 a.m. + lunch from 11 a.m.–3 p.m.
  • No reservations required.
  • All tips will be donated to benefit The Salvation Army USA, as part of a local Eagle Scout project to build a new scoreboard for its downtown Raleigh location.

So, does this mean that The Mecca is getting ready to officially reopen? We can’t answer that question for certain. In a Facebook comment, The Mecca shared that they “hope to open for regular hours and daily double cheeseburgers very soon.

  • The Mecca is one of Raleigh’s oldest restaurants.
  • Founders Nicolaos and Helen Doumbalis moved what was then known as the Mecca Luncheonette from the corner of Fayetteville + Hargett Street to its current location in 1937.
  • Paul Dombalis — the grandson of Nicolaos and Helen — was the last family owner of the business.
  • Empire Eats Restaurant Group currently own the business.
  • The downtown establishment has been closed since the start of the pandemic.
