Canes trade Mikko Rantanen to Dallas Stars

Mikko Rantanen was the crown jewel of a landmark trade earlier this season. Now, he’s off to the Texas for $12 million a year.

After his stunning trade to the Carolina Hurricanes in late January, Mikko Rantanen has been traded again, this time to the Dallas Stars for a $12 million salary. Rantanen was traded in the final hours before the NHL trade deadline on Friday, March 7.

Sources say Rantanen declined an extension deal with Carolina + expected to be with his former team, the Colorado Avalanche, for his entire career. Rantanen is expected to sign a max-term eight-year extension with the Stars.

On the other side of the deal, Carolina gained forward Logan Stankoven and 2026 + 2027 first-round and third-round draft picks. In his second year in the league, Stankoven has notched 29 points over 59 games with the Stars.

Since his previous trade, Rantanen has dropped from No. 7 to No. 12 in overall points and has scored just two goals and four assists in 13 games with Carolina. At Colorado this season, he was averaging 1.3 points per game, and he’s falling short of 0.5 per game here in Raleigh.
