🍏 Bye, bye Brat Summer
‘Tis the season of pumpkins galore. | Photo by RALtoday
It’s official, Brat summer has come to an end, sigh. But, fear not, Raleighites. To ring in the season of pumpkin spice, comfy sweaters + hayrides, we’ve found three u-pick apple orchards, corn mazes, and pumpkin patchesaround the Triangle.
Plus, since we know that sip happens, we also included three local cideries as an ap-peel-ling bonus.
Orchards + pumpkin picking
Millstone Creek Orchards, Ramseur ~60 minutes from downtown | Grab a fall-flavored dessertfrom the on-site bakery, Granny’s Goodies. Then, head over to the orchards to pick apples for your own sweet treats — just be sure to make a reservation in advance.
Page Farms, Raleigh | Looking for the perfect pumpkin? Find what you’re searching for and then some with this family-owned farm. For more than 100 years this farm has provided community experiences and this season is no different.
Phillips Farm, Cary | This might be corny, but the seasonal events are a-maze-ing. Tickets for the corn maze and family fun days are on sale now.
Nothing like a little cider to bring in the season.

In-cider info
East Bower Cider Company | Raleigh’s first cidery is serving up an extensive selection of ciders. The best part? The patio is dog friendly so you can sip on cider with your furry friend.
Mordecai Beverage Co. | Grab a crafted cocktail or one of the many IPAs, the Wanna Be A Baller IPA sounds refreshing. Plus, head over on any Tuesday to join the Run Club — all levels of experience are welcome.
Bull City Ciderworks | Both locations offer a wide range of ciders, but if you’re looking for something seasonal, we’d recommend the Cardinal Cin. It’s made with spicy cinnamon + it’s perfect to enjoy at one of Bull City’s weekly events.

Looking for a top-rated university that not only paves the way to a successful career, but also provides a well-rounded liberal arts and sciences education and nationally recognized faculty?
We’ve got two reasons this is the week to consider completing your education at UNC Asheville.
🏫 Access Asheville upped to $90,000
Breaking news: Access Asheville upped its qualifying annual income to $90,000. The university’s financial aid program guarantees fully covered tuition and fees for North Carolina residents whose annual family income is $90,000 or less (previously $80,000) — making a high-quality education more accessible to more than half of NC families and residents.
🧑💻 It’s Free Application Week
ICYMI, this week is College Application Week (aka Free Application Week). From Monday, Oct. 21 to Sunday, Oct. 27, UNC Asheville is among the participating NC colleges that are waiving their application fees — yes, that means you can apply for free when applying through the CFNC portal.
Raleigh City Council approved the sale of two properties to Habitat for Humanity for $200,000, facilitating the construction of four affordable homes. Targeted at first-time buyers earning up to 80% of the area median income, these homes will remain affordable for at least 99 years, supporting the city’s housing efforts.
Development
The City of Durham is reimagining the future of the historic Durham Athletic Park, once home to the Bulls and NC Central’s baseball team. With plans for a study by Perkins & Will, the city aims to explore new uses for the park, potentially transforming it into a vibrant multi-use venue. (Axios Raleigh)
Health
Healing Transitions’ celebrated the expansion of the women’s campus on Thursday, Oct. 17, which will now support 200+ women. The renovation addresses a growing demand for addiction recovery services, providing free resources to underserved and uninsured individuals. (ABC 11)
Legacy
UNC wide receiver Tylee Craft, 23, died from Stage 4 lung cancer Saturday, Oct. 12, prompting an emotional tribute from friends + teammates. Craft, remembered as a great person and talented athlete, inspired NC State’s DJ Jackson to play in his honor during the Oct. 12 game against Syracuse. (The News & Observer)
Number
$9 million. That’s how much a rare copy of the U.S. Constitution, printed 237 years ago, sold for at a NC auction. The document, thought to be the only privately owned copy of its type, attracted intense bidding. Someone scored quite the gem. (WUNC)
Scammers’ tactics are increasingly sophisticated — OmniWatch offers a groundbreaking layer of identity protection (think: 24/7 monitoring, full-scale identity restoration, and up to $25,000 in scam insurance).*

A pair of thermal fleece lined leggings. Made with an elastic waistband and moisture-wicking fabric, they’re perfect for both casual and active wear.
Good morning, Raleigh. I had a blast eating all that I could get my hands on at the state fair yesterday. One of my favorite picks was the mango + strawberry smoothie inside of a fresh pineapple. If you haven’t gotten to the fair yet, I suggest getting there as early as possible to beat the long lines and overall foot traffic. Taking the shuttle bus from the Dogwood Lot was a life saver.
