We’ve got lots to do in Durham. | Photo by Colin Rowley via Unsplash
The Triangle’s got a lot to offer, so we’re taking a break from Raleigh today to head just down the road to see what Durham has to offer.
If you’ve been to Durham, chances are you’ve walked the paths of American Tobacco Campus for a Durham Bulls Game, a show at DPAC, or another activity. Let’s think outside the box today.
What to do:
The Carolina Theatre | Catch a retro flick, world-class concert, and learn about Durham’s history in the theater’s exhibits.
Missy Lane’s Assembly Room | Come for the speakeasy vibes and local jazz, stay for the eye-catching cocktails.
Museum of Life and Sciences | Explore 84 acres of hands-on science, including lessons on aerospace, local wildlife, and insects.
Sarah P. Duke Gardens | In the heart of one of the country’s most prestigious universities, explore these ever-blooming gardens for a tranquil afternoon.
Where to eat and drink:
Cocoa Cinnamon | These three eclectic shops are inspired by churrerías. Don’t miss the Dr. Durham and the al mokha made with, of course, cocoa + cinnamon.
Kingfisher | This James-Beard nominated lounge is the perfect spot for a moody craft cocktail in a vibrant basement setting.
Nanas | After a brief hiatus, the Rockwood staple is back with a menu inspired by matriarchs, local produce + meals made with love. Whatever you do, don’t miss the tiramisu.
Pizzeria Toro | This eatery is in the heart of downtown with inventive single-serving pizzas, a bustling atmosphere, and wood-fired eats.
Saltbox Seafood Joint | Headed by James Beard Award-winning chef Ricky Moore, this elevated seafood shack has a menu that changes daily + seasonally to keep up with the freshest NC seafood.
Heads up: Some of these events may be canceled or changed due to Hurricane Helene. Contact event organizers for more details.

The new waterfront development will add yet another reason to love the growing community, located just 25 minutes from Raleigh. | Photos provided by Flowers Plantation
The 3,000 acres that Flowers Plantation sits on has undergone stunning transformations in recent years — and the community is adding two exciting new additions over the next seven years:
Waterfront district
2025 will kickstart development on the new North Waterfront District, a mixed-use development to be located east of the Percy Flowers Crossroads. Currently in planning stages, the new district will feature waterfront restaurants, a tavern, hotel, condos, greenspace, and more — all within a neo-urban design. Take a peek at what’s in store.
With 45 neighborhoods and all the amenities you need (think: grocery stores, dining, and retail), the community is connected by 35 miles of walkways + trails winding through its country setting. There’s even a YMCA, UNC Medical Center, schools, and community events — meaning you really never have to leave.
The Triangle can expect 1-3 inches of rainfall, gusts of wind reaching up to 40 mph + potential tornadoes from Hurricane Helene today. Gov. Roy Cooper issued a state of emergency for NC — stay inside, and read more from our hurricane guide about how to stay safe. (The News & Observer)
Edu
Supported by a $350 million bond initiative, Wake Tech is moving forward with expanding its Perry Health Sciences Campus east of downtown. Site plans include road work, street realignment, a roundabout, and some demolition. The new three-story facility will include a simulation hospital and will address nationwide healthcare worker shortages. (Triangle Business Journal)
Sports
Canes head coach Rod Brind’Amour has a new face on the team: his son. Skyler Brind’Amour, 25, remembers jumping into his dad’s arms when the Canes won the 2006 Stanley Cup — watch the duo at preseason games or the home opener on Friday, Oct. 11. (The News & Observer)
