Attend these events celebrating the Hispanic heritage of Raleighites. | Photo via the City of Raleigh
Hispanic Heritage Month is Sunday, Sept. 15 through Tuesday, Oct. 15, spotlighting the histories, cultures, and contributions of Hispanic Americans with roots in Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, Central America, and South America.
Sept. 15 is the date when five Latin American countries declared independence from Spain in 1821 — Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. Mexican Independence Day is Sept. 16, while Chile’s is Sept. 18.
Here are some ways to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month.
Latinos Run Raleigh is hosting a free Hispanic Heritage Month Run tomorrow, Sept. 21 at Fleet Feet in Raleigh at 8 a.m.
The Raleigh Tamale Festival is tomorrow, Sept. 21 from 2-6 p.m. at Moore Square with lots of activities and a friendly tamale competition.
The town of Apex is hosting the Latino Arts Festival on Saturday, Sept. 28 from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. The event will feature live music + entertainment, a food truck rodeo, and more.
Shop Local Raleigh’s final food truck rodeo of the year is tomorrow on Fayetteville Street, and it’s bittersweet. While I’m eager to eat and grab goodies from JAM Soft Serve Ice Cream, Lil’s Cheesesteaks + much more — if my stomach will have it — I’m a little bummed out that it’s the last rodeo of the year.
