National Book Lovers Day in the 919

Celebrate National Book Lovers Day by supporting local businesses and authors

Today is National Book Lovers Day, and Raleigh is filled with local literary gems — so we decided to highlight a few bookstores + authors with NC ties. Here are a few ways to jump start your book loving day.

Bookstores to visit

Blackbird Books & Coffee | From pop-up events to silent book clubs, this bookstore has become quite the literary destination.

Dog-Eared Books | This place is a literary haven witha homey, spacious structure + $20 fill-a-bag events. Psst, the next one is Sunday, Sept. 15.

🎵 Moonshine + Motorsports: A musical ride through NC history

Music meets storytelling at Moonshine and Motorsports Music, a special concert series kicking off at the North Carolina Museum of History tomorrow, Aug. 10.

Inspired by North Carolina’s unique cultural tapestry, this three-part event follows the existing Moonshine and Motorsports Trail from Raleigh to Elizabeth City, musically + narratively highlighting historic stops along the way.

Americana legend Jim Lauderdale + bluegrass trio the Kruger Brothers headline tomorrow’s performance, which also features a number of special musical guests.

  • The 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, France wrap up this weekend. Today’s events include sport climbing, table tennis, wrestling + rhythmic gymnastics — starting at 9 a.m. EST. Meet Raleigh Olympians that competed this year and tune in for the closing ceremony on Sunday, Aug. 11.

  • Crabtree Mall has a new addition. The shopping center recently welcomed McCormick Creations Gifts + Candle Studio. The store offers candle making experiences and custom gifts. Patrons can now find the store on the lower level near Belk.

  • Wake County Public Schools Board of Education approved raises for teachers, bus drivers, and other school system employees. Teachers will receive a four percent increase in local salary supplement, bus drivers will have a new $20 minimum wage, and other hourly employees will make at least $17.75. (INDY Week)

  • Raleigh-based software company Levitate has fundraised $55 million in its effort to onboard at least 50 new employees over the next year. The software company specializes in relationship-centered businesses, offering a suite of tools like website design, blog content creation + Google Review management. Will you be applying?   • A new exhibit showcasing contributions African Americans have made to Raleigh is now open for viewing. The cultural exhibit “Centuries in the Making: A Cultural Legacy of South Park and East Raleigh Neighborhoods” is in Historic South Park and is free to explore.
History
  • The NC Department of Transportation and NC State are partnering up for a two-year pilot to identify unmarked burial sites and graves of Indigenous and formerly enslaved people, along with African American cemeteries in Edgecomb County. The project will not only identify burial sites, but also take measures toward preservation. (WUNC)
