Eating meat-free hasn’t always been easy, but in Raleigh, it’s a piece of (vegan) cake.

Our local food scene is as vibrant as ever, so it’s no surprise there are a variety of local chefs serving up fresh, vegetarian and vegan bites across town. From juicy meatless burgers to scrumptious vegan desserts, here are 30+ restaurants serving up meat-free fare in Oak City.

100% vegetarian/vegan eats

Pure Vegan Cafe, 8369 Creedmoor Rd. | This juicery and eatery is 100% vegan. Try this: The breakfast burger topped with vegan egg, bacon, and gouda.

The Fiction Kitchen, 2409 Crabtree Blvd., Ste. 100 | This 100% vegetarian kitchen has everything from eastern NC-style barbecue to chicken + waffles.

Element Gastropub, 421 Fayetteville St., Ste. 103 | Enjoy vegan fare like the Nojangles chik’n tenders and faux steak au poivre.

Little Native, 426 S. Person St. | This intimate coffee shop serves bites from bakery Crummy Hunters that are completely vegan and gluten free.

Lucky Tree, 3801 Hillsborough St. | While munching on a vegan baked good, enjoy local live music and organic coffee.

Purr Cup Cafe, 210 Prospect Ave. | The only thing better than visiting with the cats at this cafe is the 100% vegan coffee + bites.

Open
  • The newly renovated Stone Houses at Dorothea Dix Park are now open as a welcome center and office spaces for park employees. These 100-year-old houses were previously used for Dix Hospital patients and have been revitalized as part of the park’s strategic plan.
Closed
  • Brookside Bodega has closed after two years on Brookside Drive, and the space is now home to Otomi. While we’ll miss the bites from Brookside, we’re excited to try classic tacos, quesadillas, and guisados from this new concept.
Feel Good
  • You might not be smarter than this seventh grader — Davis Drive Middle School student Ananya Rao Prassanna tied for third place in the Scripps National Spelling Bee last week. This was Ananya’s third trip to the national spelling bee and progressed from 74th place in 2023. Great job, Ananya. (CBS 17)
Arts
  • Raleigh architect Matt Pearson is the mind behind a new memorial on the beaches of Normandy honoring the US naval combat demolition units on D-Day. Later this week, President Joe Biden and French President Emmanuel Macron plan to visit the memorial. (Triangle Business Journal)

  • June is National Adopt a Shelter Cat Month, and Wake County Animal Center has reduced its fees to adopt a feline friend. Most cats have a $45 adoption fee and cats above the age of 5 are $15. Meet the kitties.

  • Check the results of the Raleigh Regional to see if NC State bested James Madison to advance in the NCAA baseball tournament.

Hey Raleigh. I was gone last week for a trip to New York City, and all I can think about since is more public transit in Raleigh, especially to sports events.

This weekend, my boyfriend and I visited the Duke Lemur Center in Durham, which was just incredible. My favorite were the Coquerel’s sifakas — you might recognize them from the kids show “Zoboomafoo,” which was partially filmed at the lemur center.
