What is a typical Raleighite’s personality type?

Does where we live have any bearing on our personalities? A growing field of psychological research called geopsychology says “yes.”

According to geopsychology, those from Raleigh are likely less extroverted than their friends across the nation in, say, Madison, Wisconsin. And while you may have heard about that good ol’ southern charm, now there may be a form of scientific proof to back it up.

What is it?

ResearchGate defines geopsychology as “the relationship between the complex matrix of static and time-varying geophysical and geochemical variables within a locality and human behavior.”

In other words, there’s a correlation between one’s geophysical space and one’s mind. In particular, research on the “Big Five” traits — conscientiousness, agreeableness, neuroticism, openness, and extroversion — has led researchers to create a set of personality maps for the US.

Conscientiousness

Here in Raleigh, we tend to be more conscientious. As an efficient, organized group, it’s no surprise that we have so many thriving and exciting industries.

Agreeableness

According to the map, Raleigh is full of compassionate, friendly folk, and we can’t help but agree. As your friendly local newsletter, allow us to present you with our how-to on making friends in the City of Oaks.

Neuroticism

As a city of more emotionally stable residents, Raleighites tend to experience fewer negative emotions. Maybe it’s that our weather tends to be quite nice, or maybe it’s just that we live in the best city around.

Openness

Raleigh is an open book. Unlike some of our friends on the NC coast, we’re more likely to try new things and often have a decent awareness of our own feelings. In other words, we’re always willing to take the leap.

Extroversion

As a slightly more introverted city, those of us here in Raleigh sometimes prefer quieter, solo activities. We’ve got your back: Check out our guides to hiking trails, indie bookstores, and parks.

🍅 Hot girl summer is so last year

Tomatoes and mayo are an iconic southern pairing. For the fourth year, Duke’s Mayo is bringing back its celebration of that very duo — Hot Tomato Summer.

Celebrated in Richmond, Greenville, Charlotte, and Charleston in the past, 2024 marks the first year for Raleigh to join the lineup.

What is Hot Tomato Summer?

The 10-day event invites local restaurants to whip up their most creative recipes. The only rule? They must use Duke’s mayo and tomatoes. Anything from the classic BLT to a creamy cocktail is fair game, and in the end, winning restaurants will take home the “Golden Tomato” award.

When is it?

This year, Hot Tomato Summer will take place July 18-28, so stay tuned. Duke’s is currently accepting partnership applications from local restaurants.

How can I take part?

During the event, look out for mayo + tomato-themed specials on local menus. You’ll get the chance to vote online for your favorite dish to win the Golden Tomato.

In the meantime, you can check out previous year’s Hot Tomato Summer merch. (Because we all need a mayo jar pool floatie.)

If you’re a restaurant interested in joining the fun, learn more by sending an email to Duke’s or signing up now.
