If this warm Raleigh weather has you craving shortcake and singing “Strawberry Fields Forever,” then we have great news for you — strawberry season in NC typically begins in mid-to-late April and runs through early June.

To celebrate the season, we rounded up six you-pick strawberry farms around Raleigh where you can pluck bright red berries right off the vine.

Buckwheat Farm, 2700 Holland Rd., Apex | City Editor Allie has happy memories growing up picking berries at this esteemed strawberry farm. Pre-picked strawberries available on a first come, first served basis, and stay tuned for an opening you-pick date. Plus, stop by the year-round farm stand for eggs and veggies.

DJ’s Berry Patch, 1223 Salem Church Rd., Apex | This family-owned farm is officially open for the season with pre-picked strawberries, ice cream, plants, and produce — the you-pick option should be open by mid-April, so check out the farm’s social media for updates.

Grasshopper Farms, 8004 Poole Rd., Knightdale | The berries are ripe for picking at this strawberry farm, plant + flower nursery, and ice cream shop fit for the whole fam.

Page Farms, 6100 Mt. Herman Rd., Raleigh | Follow the family-owned farm on Facebook for info on the next you-pick dates or swing by to pick up pre-picked strawberries while supplies last. Also, save the date for the next Handmade Market At The Farm on Saturday, May 4.

Po Hous Farm, 2300 Richardson Rd., Apex | This farm expects to welcome strawberry pickers in late April, and also offers seasonal produce, free-range eggs, homemade ice cream, and sourdough bread.

Porter Farms and Nursery, 7615 Ten-Ten Rd., Raleigh | Get ready to fill your basket because berries are ready to be picked — don’t forget to grab fresh produce while you’re there.

If you live near Johnston County, fill your buckets at these you-pick farms.

Bonus: Once you’ve picked the best berries in the patch, learn how to whip up Chef Coleen Speaks’ impressive strawberry pavlova from Hummingbird at home.

From the editor
The other night, I ate dinner on Superica’s patio in Cary’s Fenton with my fiance. This Tex-Mex spot serves his favorite tamales in the Triangle, and I almost always get the flautas. According to our waitress, we have to come back during brunch to get the huevos rancheros — I’m looking forward to it.
