🏙️ Rooftop dining downtown

The Queen City has an abundance of unique rooftop bars and restaurants. It’s hard to choose a favorite, but here are a couple good callouts: The Charlotte Beer Garden has one of the largest selections of draft beer available in one restaurant + Graham Street Pub & Patio is conveniently located near Bank of America Stadium and Truist Field.

Wherever you end up, your food and drinks are almost guaranteed to be paired with views of Charlotte’s stunning skyline.

🏎️ A huge NASCAR race

Prepare for full-throttle fun this Memorial Day weekend, because the 65th running of the historic Coca-Cola 600 is on Sunday, May 26. The NASCAR races begin at 6 p.m. at the Charlotte Motor Speedway.

Pro-tip: Arrive early for driver appearances + a Matchbox Twenty concert.

Look! Up in the sky! It’s a bird. It’s a plane. It’s today’s total solar eclipse.

According to NASA, while Raleigh isn’t in the eclipse’s path of totality, our region will experience a partial eclipse today from ~1:59 p.m. to ~4:29 p.m. Our maximum view of the phenomenon — when the sun is 78.6% blocked by the moon — is expected at 3:15 p.m.

Remember, you’ll need a pair of solar viewers to safely see the eclipse; be sure to brush up on NASA’s safety guidelines.

If you’re looking to join a free viewing party, try these:
  • The Great American Eclipse Viewing Party | 2-4:30 p.m. | Wake Forest Community Library | Registration is required to snag a pair of eclipse viewing glasses.

From the editor
Hi, Raleigh. I’m Monica, a national content editor at 6AM City, happily popping in to work with Allie + Cat from time to time.

I have loved following the recent local March Madness fandom — both NC State teams were incredible to watch during the tournament and I’m sure you’re proud. The buzz reminds me of how I felt last year when my hometown’s team, the San Diego State University Aztecs, finally made it to the NCAA championship.
