Having a comprehensive view of your household spending is vital to a sound financial strategy. | Photo provided by Richardson Private Wealth Advisors
It’s hard to overstate the importance of a sound financial strategy — your current spending + saving habits determine the success of your long-term goals. Think: buying a home, paying down debt, or having a fab retirement.
Not sure where you stand? Here’s how you can check in on your financial health:
Step 1: Get organized
Not unlike cute coffee mugs, financial documents collect surprisingly quickly over time. Make sure you know where the following items live:
Financial account statements
Bills + receipts
Checks, pay stubs, and employee benefits
Insurance policies
Tax statements + returns
Mortgage and personal property records
Retirement plan and investment statements
Step 2: Understand your habits
Income and lifestyle changes over time — and so does your spending.
The key to staying on track is to regularly audit your income and expenses and adjust them based on your long-term financial goals. Track your spending for three to four months + divide them into one of five bins:
Essential: Rent, food, and other necessities
Lifestyle: Expenses that bring joy (aka, the fun stuff)
The best method depends entirely on your habits — if you’re a chronic shopper, for example, the rigidity of the envelope system might help you curb those late-night sprees.

We’re hoping to see plenty more celebrations from the Wolfpack women’s basketball team this weekend. | Photo by Mitchell Northam, WUNC
Notching its third Final Four appearance and first time coinciding with the men’s team, the NC State women’s basketball team is ready to take it all. As college hoops fans turn to the Pack, keep reading to learn more about key players on the semifinal-bound women’s team.
Guard Saniya Rivers is a force for the Wolfpack playing nearly every minute and scoring an average of 12.7 points each game. Plus, Rivers will square up against South Carolina, who she played for her freshman year. Also keep an eye on Aziaha James — she’s averaged 24.25 points per game in the 2024 NCAA Tournament.
The Pack plays undefeated No. 1-seeded South Carolina tonight at 7 p.m. — get a deal on ESPN+ to watch live. The two Carolinas teams are facing off for a chance at the championship on Sunday, April 7 against the victor of Iowa vs. UConn.
I love this story from Brooke Cain at The News & Observer about Wolfpack superstitions... and I have some of my own. For example, I had a candle from Edge of Urge lit during one of the first ACC Tournament games, and it seemed like quite the good luck charm for both men’s and women’s games.
During the second round game against Oakland, the candle burnt out for good while my friends and I celebrated an overtime, game-clinching three from Jayden Taylor — so of course I bought a new, identical candle before both teams’ Sweet Sixteen and Elite Eight games, and it’s been working pretty well. Got any team superstitions? Let us know.
