📚 Book it to your local library

This Sunday, April 7 through Saturday, April 13 was recently proclaimed as National Library Week in NC, and with 23 public libraries across the county, the Wake County Public Libraries system has plenty of resources to harness — and books are just the beginning.

First, we recommend getting a library card. They’re free for Wake County residents. Once you register online (it takes ~two minutes), you’ll have instant access to digital resources, including e-books and databases.

Pro tip: Our local libraries use Libby, an app for borrowing e-books, audio books, and magazines.

All WCPL locations have computers, free Wi-Fi, and self-service printers and copy machines. Some locations have small group study rooms and conference rooms available to reserve.

Here’s a glimpse at some library services (make appointments here):
  • Need help with research? A librarian can help you get started with a list of resources.
  • Navigate the college application process with a librarian — they will help you find test prep, and provide application and financial aid guidance.
  • Meet with a librarian for job search assistance, including resume reviews, cover letter help, and interview prep.
  • Get mobile device advice and learn computer fundamentals.
Here are some of our favorite library resources:
Find your local library here. Psst... there are 11 in Raleigh. Also, make sure to check the event page for upcoming classes ranging from creative journaling to chair yoga and teen programs.

This elevated aesthetic is inspired by the outdoors

Out with the old, in with the new.

Local insect repellent company Murphy’s Naturals recently launched a complete rebrand that’s playful, thoughtful, and a little quirky — just like them.

The revamped design includes a nature-inspired logo + updated packaging boasting the Earth’s colors. They also eliminated unnecessary plastics and dyes to reduce their environmental footprint and to continue “Doing Others Good.”

Although Murphy’s looks different now, their effective natural products have stayed just as good (and the same price).

🍽️ Outstanding hospitality, indeed

Crawford and Son is one of five finalists for the James Beard Award for Outstanding Hospitality presented by American Airlines, and the awards ceremony will take place Monday, June 10 at the Lyric Opera of Chicago.

Fellow Raleigh semifinalists Ajja, Chef Preeti Waas for Cheeni, and Bittersweet were not selected as nominees in their respective categories, but make sure to try them for yourselves.

This annual award recognizes chefs, restaurateurs, authors, and journalists that exude exceptional talent and achievement.

Crawford and Son is led by (you guessed it) Chef Scott Crawford who is a five-time semifinalist for Best Chef: Southeast and goes beyond the menu, offering inventive dishes like before-meal savory aperitivo popsicles.

Here is your sign to make a reservation. City Editor Cat recently enjoyed her first Crawford and Son dinner and can attest to the stellar service and delectable foods.

From the editor
I’m getting so excited to attend my first Dreamville Festival at Dix Park this weekend. I’m most looking forward to seeing SZA and J. Cole perform, the art installations, and local food options — I can’t wait for the City of Oaks to be buzzing with excitement all weekend long. Let us know if you’re going, too.

Also, take a look at the festival’s economic impact from 2023 (we’re talking $145.9 million for Raleigh).
