Whether you’re cutting back on caffeine or just a tea lover at heart, we’re sharing a few of our favorite tea rooms and casual shops. Plus, any of these afternoon tea options would be a romantic getaway for Valentine’s Day — make your reservations now.

50 Cups, 3512 Wade Ave. | This newer tea cafe emphasizes the health benefits of tea + focuses on the community-building aspect of the space. We recommend an Instagram-worthy pink beet root latte while connecting with other tea lovers.

Heirloom, 219 S. West St. | This zen spot located downtown reigns supreme when it comes to loose leaf tea varieties. We recommend trying the jasmine loose leaf with green tea and jasmine flowers. Though the tea is the star of the show, this premium tea house offers coffee, sake + teapots for sale so you can brew from home.

Heights House, 308 S. Boylan Ave. | Your city editors got the chance to attend afternoon tea in this historic Italianate-style mansion, and it was decadent. We loved the tea options from Rishi Tea and pastries from lucettegrace that rotate every service. Plus, you can’t beat the space.

North Carolina Museum of Art, 2110 Blue Ridge Rd. | Dining at this esteemed museum has always been special, but the introduction of tea service (including family-friendly dining) has upped the café. Enjoy canapes, finger sandwiches, and patisserie before wandering the impressive galleries.

Fearrington House Restaurant, 2000 Fearrington Village Center, Pittsboro (~45 minutes from downtown) | Take your pick from 19 different teas and a wide variety of pastries and sandwiches. This English-inspired village also offers boutique shopping, a luxury spa, and plenty more.

Be-leaf it or not, January is a good time to get gardening. Now is the time to shop seeds, do some routine maintenance, and even sow certain plants.

Spring for seeds

Peruse seed catalogs and grab those springtime favorites that are so popular they tend to sell out come the thaw. We’re talking seeds like snap peas, radishes, specialty lettuces, and heirloom tomatoes. You can also get your wishlist going for the spring planting of fall bulbs like hostas, gladiolas, and dahlias.

Check out these local spots to nab your favorites:

Get growing

While you’re at the nursery, grab some seeds that you can plant right now (or, at least, very soon). Use this tool to calculate when to sow some of these early-season crops:
  • Beans
  • Beets
  • Broccoli
  • Cabbage

From the editor
Speaking of Valentine’s Day, I recently wrote a guide to some date ideas for various Raleighites. While this list might be something you want to review soon, we want to know, what’s the best date you’ve been on in Raleigh? Let us know.

I mentioned mine in that article — waiting for a table at Stanbury with a round of drinks + apps under space heaters in mid-December. It was a memorable meal, too, but I loved having time to just sit and talk.
