Hey Raleigh, City Editor Allie here: happy early weekend. Head to stores, cafes, and more tomorrow for First Friday — and get some shopping done for your loved ones, too.

If you’ve finished your holiday shopping list and checked it twice, try a show at Raleigh Improv with Jon Lovitz or browse the art in the already adorable Boylan Heights neighborhood. For a bit more entertainment, watch the NC State men’s a cappella group Grains of Time perform, or go to Reynolds Coliseum and watch the No. 5 ranked Wolfpack women’s basketball team ball against Illinois State.

If you’re headed downtown this weekend, maybe take one last dip at Poole’side Pies. This restaurant by Chef Ashley Christansen is closing at the end of December. If you visit, our readers recommend the pickle Caesar salad + the sausage alla vodka pizza.

Yo-deh-lay-hee-hoo. Do you hear that? The mountains are calling you to the sweetest little alpine village that’s like something from a fairy tale: Leavenworth, Washington.
  • Why go? Leavenworth shines bright every holiday season, turning into the Village of Lights: Christmastown and showing off with hundreds of thousands of festive lights, meandering carolers, live entertainment, and more. In January, the town kicks off the new year with a month of Winter Karneval events (think: fire dancers, ice carving, and fireworks).
  • Act like a local: If you like beer, you’ve come to the right town. Warm up at Bushel & Bee Taproom, where you can choose from two dozen beers and ciders on tap. Dogs are welcome, too.
  • Where to stay: Vrbo: Alpine View Haus on Main, a Bavarian-themed condo for up to four people (~$240/night)*
