Celebrate Black Cat Day in Raleigh by rescuing a feline

Today, Oct. 27 is Black Cat Day in Raleigh + across the country. Although “black cat bias” — a theory that darker colored cats are less likely to be adopted — might be a hoax, we want to highlight local kitties who might be your purr-fect match. These are all local nonprofit rescues, meaning you’re adopting, not shopping.
  • Cause for Paws | This rescue — which you might know from two local thrift stores — is home to 23-week-old brothers Forest Bear and Black Bear in its north Raleigh location. If you’re not ready for a full commitment, try fostering; the rescue provides all supplies, you just need to bring your time and love.
  • Meow House Cat Rescue | Meet the gang at Meow House. With eight black cats to choose from, you can have your pick from older cats like Flynn or Mr. Kitty, or kittens like Ariel, Loverboy, and plenty more.
  • SAFE Haven for Cats | Visit potential fur babies at Purr Cup Cafe, a coffee shop where you can meet cats. Plus, double check the “Holding Out For My Hero” section of the website — these cats have been in the shelter for a long time or have special needs.
  • Second Chance Pet Adoptions | Founded in 1987, Second Chance is the oldest no-kill rescue organization in Wake County. Adopt a black kitten like Elara, or brothers Rumple and Ratcliff.
  • SPCA of Wake County | The SPCA has a wide variety of cats, dogs, and other pets like rabbits and guinea pigs.

October is National Bullying Prevention Month, and 40% of students reported being bullied on school campuses in the past year. Sadly, this statistic has been steadily increasing since 2019.

Enter: Coast to Mountains Preparatory Academy (CM Prep), a private, virtual charter school providing K-11 students and parents with an alternative to the traditional school experience.

“His transition was really smooth,” says Jennifer, a parent who transitioned her student to CM Prep after he experienced bullying in his previous school. “His grades have improved and he’s getting hands-on learning experiences so that he can learn at his own pace.”

For families whose students may face bullying in their schools, CM Prep counselors share these five tips:
  1. Encourage open and honest communication with children about their experiences.
  2. Empower students to speak up, and teach them how to identify bullying.
  3. Engage with the school’s support programs.
  4. Teach and model positive behavior.
  5. Look into mental health resources.

Tonight, I’m headed to my first Canes game of the season. I’m excited to see the team in action, but I’m just a bit more excited for all the new food offerings, like the BBQ Lab and Gonza. Let us know what new items you’re most curious about at PNC Arena and I’ll try my best to report back.
