Once it reopens, the Rialto will continue its usual independent film offerings, but will also have live music and performances, according to new owner Hayes Permar. And don’t worry — the theater will still have its iconic look with original dome lights.
Alamo Drafthouse features the best of both worlds — the latest blockbusters and plenty of older films you might not have seen yet. Plus, you can order popcorn and items off of the full meal from your seat. Alamo also offers Video Vortex, a free video rental service, themed movie screenings, and boozy milkshakes during your movie.
The Cary Theater has contemporary releases as well as live performances and an annual short film festival called Beyond. To continue supporting the theater, rent out the space or purchase merchandise from the shop.
Keep an eye out for classics, late light screenings, and for students, free curated double features through a local film club at this nonprofit art house theater. The theater accepts tax-deductible donations and you can become a member starting at $50 per year.
Check out this drive-in’s slate of double features and enjoy the summer weather while watching a new movie. T-shirts, hoodies, magnets, and documentary DVDs are available through the online store.

Corpse Flower at JC Raulston Arboretum to bloom this week

One of the smelliest flowers in the plant kingdom is blooming in our own backyards. JC Raulston Arboretum is home to the corpse flower, the common name for Amorphophallus titanum.
This flower, named Wolfgang by owner Diane Mays, is preparing to bloom for the first time since its donation to NC State from Ohio State University in 2017. Once Wolfgang blooms, it will heat up to help spread its distinct, often unpleasant smell to attract bugs and aid in the pollination process. Blooms range from 4 to 8 feet tall.
It’s hard to gauge exactly when the plant will bloom, but NC State researchers determined that Wolfgang should bloom this week by comparing the plant’s growth rates to others grown in greenhouses. The arboretum will be open with extended hours for visitors to catch a glimpse and whiff of this rare flower, 8:30 a.m. to 7 p.m.
I’m feeling pretty nostalgic for the Rialto Theatre — I saw “The French Dispatch” there in 2021. It was the perfect place for a new Wes Anderson movie. With his next movie coming out this weekend, I can’t help but want another trip to such a beautiful theater, so I’m anxiously awaiting the theater’s return.
