How to celebrate baseball with Copa de la Diversión

Minor League Baseball fans know that baseball season means it’s time for Copa de la Diversión (or “Fun Cup”) — a season-long event series designed to “connect teams with their local US Hispanic communities.”

For special games and events, the Durham Bulls transform into the Toros Bravos de Durham, in which the team wears a logo featuring the snorting bull in the style of sugar skull artwork.

Copa de la Diversión began in 2017 with four teams in Charlotte, Durham, Visalia, and Las Vegas. The next year, it expanded to 33 teams and added a little competition. The 2018 winner? The attendance-record-breaking Mariachis de Nuevo México in Albuquerque.

This year, 90 MiLB teams will compete to be crowned campeón based on ballpark experience, community engagement, and philanthropic impact.

Help the Toros Bravos de Durham win by cheering them on at one of these upcoming games:
Just be sure you’re representing your team in style.

Breaking down Wake County’s proposed budget

Breaking down Wake County’s proposed $1.8 billion budget

Wake County Manager David Ellis recently presented his recommended Wake County budget for the 2024 fiscal year — which starts July 1, 2023 and runs through June 30, 2024 — to the board of commissioners.

Ellis’ $1.8 billion proposed budget focuses on making notable investments in programs like public safety, affordable housing, child welfare, behavioral health, and education. The majority of the budget — $1.06 billion, or 57% — would be invested in education, including $32.5 million for Wake Tech.

If approved, there would be a total tax increase of 3.25 cents and the property tax rate would bump up to 65.2 cents per every $100 of property value. Read: If you own a median-valued home, you would pay around $98 more in the 2024 fiscal year.

As a result, this would generate an additional $65 million for the General Fund and the Debt Service Fund.

The board of commissioners will hold its first work session to discuss the budget on Monday, May 8.
