We’ve been examining your Google search history... but don’t worry, you’re not the only one looking up rainbow mantis shrimp and snow cream. Google dropped the Raleigh-Durham area’s top trending searches from 2022 and we’re here with the results. Spoiler alert: We like to be entertained.

It sounds like y’all are looking for a good laugh. We were the only place in the US with comedy shows as its top trending “near me” search. We’ll see you at these local comedy show venues and the opening of Goodnights Comedy Club’s new permanent spot in the Village District.

The Triangle also loves to jam — we searched for live music more than any other city. Luckily for us, a new concert venue that could draw huge performers is being developed in Downtown South. Another one could even be built on the grounds of PNC Arena. Hopefully lots of rap artists hit up Raleigh in 2023, because that was our most searched music genre. Bonus: We think you’d like the Dreamville Music Festival.

More top searches included Fourth of July events (did you catch the fireworks at Dix Park?), Asian restaurants, and pilates.

Public biking trails are coming to RDU 🚴

It’s official. Wake County is leasing 151 acres of land for mountain biking trails from the Raleigh-Durham Airport Authority. The land, known as the “286 property,” will become an extension of Lake Crabtree County Park.

According to Wake County, cyclists have already been building and using trails at 286 for years without RDU’s permission.

The county will pay $5.26 million over the next 10 years for the public to be able to use the property, located north of Interstate 40 near William B. Umstead State Park. The lease could be renewed three times, for a potential total of 40 years.

At the start of the lease on Jan. 1, 2023, the county will begin to prepare the site as part of a master plan. Approx. $3 million could be used to rebuild seven miles of trails, add a parking lot, and develop a small picnic shelter and event area. Unpermitted footbridges and other structures will be removed.

The official opening date has not yet been announced.
THE WRAP

Today’s issue was written by Anne.

Editor’s pick: When I heard that Ryan Reynolds has skated on The Rink, I knew I needed to buy a ticket. Just kidding, I made my ice skating plans weeks ago. I had the best time gliding (read: falling) around Red Hat Amphitheater’s ice rink last weekend. ❄️
