Common flooding areas in Raleigh, NC

A map of the City of Raleigh's frequent flooding areas.
Areas prone to flooding along Crabtree Creek. | Map via City of Raleigh
Tropical storm Ian is approaching NC, potentially bringing strong winds with gusts up to 50 mph. Coastal areas of our state will see the strongest impacts of the storm on Friday, and there is a 100% chance of rain in Raleigh — with four to six inches of rain predicted in the Triangle, the City of Oaks is also at risk of significant flash flooding.

Areas situated along Crabtree Creek — which flows through central Wake County, including William B. Umstead State Park and North Raleigh — have a history of flooding. Be aware of the following spots that could be affected this weekend:
  • Areas near Crabtree Valley Mall, including Creedmoor Road, Crabtree Valley Avenue, and Glenwood Avenue
  • Intersections along Hodges Street, including Capital Boulevard, Atlantic Avenue, and Wake Forest Road
  • East Six Forks Road, near Costco
  • 2300 block of Crabtree Boulevard
Downtown Raleigh could flood, too. Water is known to quickly rise on roads around City Market, including areas near South Blount + South Person streets.

This list is not comprehensive. Check out the following resources for more flooding information:
Did you know that Raleigh also has flood monitoring cameras? There are currently 10 active cameras located near streams and flood-prone areas throughout the city, used to assess traffic and flooding when it rains (and update the handy maps linked above).

Feline good in Pittsboro đŸŸ

Meet 4 new felines at the Carolina Tiger Rescue

The Carolina Tiger Rescue will soon welcome four bobcats to its sanctuary, doubling its current number of bobcat residents. The cats will enter their new, permanent home once they are cleared by the rescue’s veterinarian.

The cats, who have lived together their entire lives, were acquired from a private owner in Texas and traveled 17+ hours to Pittsboro, NC. The two males and two females range in age from ~1.5 to 5 years old. The rescue says they’re settling in well.

Bobcats are small, highly adaptable cats found in habitats ranging from southern Canada to central Mexico. They get their name from their short, “bobbed” tail, which helps them jump up to 10 feet to ambush their prey.

The rescue will introduce each bobcat individually next week on their Instagram. We can’t wait to learn their names.
