Cryptocurrency has been a hot topic recently, with happenings like Elon Musk tweeting that he was sending a satellite called Doge-1 to the moon paid for by the cryptocurrency Dogecoin.

So what does it all mean for Raleighites? Let’s start with what cryptocurrency is.

Simply put, these digital “tokens” are intangible assets used as currency that can be utilized to purchase goods + services. According to CoinMarketMap, there are currently 10,500+ different cryptocurrencies available to the public (like Bitcoin), and the global crypto market cap is at ~$1.3 trillion.

💲Recently, Food Lion + Harris Teeter locations in the Triangle have become places to buy Bitcoin (the world’s leading cryptocurrency). Coinstar kiosks — where shoppers usually deposit loose change — now allow you to purchase Bitcoin, with a daily limit of up to $2,500.

🛍️Lolli — a Durham-based startup — is a browser extension + mobile app that allows shoppers to earn Bitcoin as rewards when they shop online. The company has an impressive list of investors, including names like Serena Williams and TikTok-star fund Animal Capital.

🤝If you’re interested in Bitcoin, cryptocurrencies, or blockchain technology — there’s a group for that. Triangle Bitcoin Meetup hosts weekly events + even has a Slack channel for enthusiasts to connect with one another.

⛽Soon, you’ll be able to pay for your snacks at Sheetz locations in Raleigh with cryptocurrency. The convenience store will be the first of its kind to accept digital currency later this summer.
