No wristband, no problem: How to enjoy Hopscotch for free

Raleigh’s favorite indie rock fest is celebrating 15 years in downtown, and while you need a wristband to see the headliners + many club shows, you can still have plenty of fun without a ticket. Here’s how to enjoy Hopscotch without a wristband.

Hopscotch is nearly here, running Sept. 4-6, and while tickets are still on sale, you don’t need a wristband to enjoy the music festival. From informative panels + documentaries to jazz and R&B day parties, this year’s lineup has something for everyone; here’s what we recommend.

BMX show | Thursday, Sept. 4 | 6:30 p.m. | Martin Street, in front of Kings | Free | High-flying bikes are coming to downtown to kick off the first day of Hopscotch in style. Plus, you’ll see skaters at this temporary skatepark all weekend.

R&B For Your Soul Day Party | Friday, Sept. 5 | 12-6 p.m. | Transfer Co. Ballroom | Free | Groove out to local R&B acts at Transfer Co. — and head next door for a bite to fuel the rest of your festival day.

“The Great Cover Up” + panel discussion | Saturday, Sept. 6 | 2 p.m. | City of Raleigh Museum | Free | This event’s a real three-for-one: watch the PBS North Carolina doc on the annual cover concert at Kings, hear from the filmmakers, and join a panel about 15 years of the fest. Panelists include music writers, festival organizers, and professors.

Little Raleigh Radio Jazz Showcase | Saturday, Sept. 6 + Sunday, Sept. 7 | Times vary | The Rialto | Free | Enjoy local jazz performances at this historic theater, courtesy of Oak City’s own independent radio station.

Check out Hopscotch’s website for the full list of day parties and lineups, and read INDY Week’s recommendations for the best acts you can see with a wristband.
