The 2050 Metropolitan Transportation Plan for the Triangle — led by the NC Capital Area Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO)— is a coordinated, long term effort to improve transportation options and access across our region.
The plan involves stakeholders from Raleigh + the Durham, Chapel Hill, Carrboro MPO, and includes visions for roadways, rail connections, public bus transit, bicycle, and pedestrian projects. 🚄
Here are the goals → and objectives:
- Protect the human and natural environment and minimize climate change → by reducing mobile source emissions and energy consumption, and by reducing negative impacts.
- Connect people to jobs, education, and other important destinations → by ensuring transportation needs are met through various modes, as well as for all groups and populations.
- Promote and expand multimodal transport and affordable choices → by enhancing existing services and facilities, improving bicycle and pedestrian amenities, and increasing utilization of non-auto transit modes.
- Manage congestion and system reliability between distinct regions → by promoting carpool and park-and-ride programming, enhancing intelligent transportation systems such as ramp metering and dynamic signaling.
- Improve infrastructure conditions and resilience → by maintaining fleets and roads, improving bicycle and pedestrian facilities, and promoting resilient planning practices.
- Ensure equity in participation → by making investments that do not create a disproportionate burden on any single community, plus promoting and enhancing public participation among all communities.
- Increase safety of travelers and residents → by promoting public health through transportation choices (e.g. carpools and rideshares).
- Stimulate the region’s economic vitality → by improving freight movements and linking land use with transportation options, as well as targeting funding to the most beneficial and cost-effective solutions.
The continued development of the plan will take approximately 18 months to complete, and the MTO is seeking public input on a variety of topics in order to inform finalized proposals.
