How two new co-editors bonded

Last weekend, we (City Editors Anne + Cat here 👋 ) found ourselves locked in a closet with little more than a bike to help us escape — just two journalists captured by the KGB in the midst of a nuclear disaster. With only one hour to escape, we did it. Kind of.

In December, we asked you, our readers, what you want to learn about Raleigh in 2022, and today we’re tackling escape rooms. Naturally, we used this as an opportunity to try out NERD Escape Room’s Chernobyl room. It was a blast. (Shoutout to Jake who gave us many, much needed clues to crack the codes.) 🔐

Here are six escape rooms with adventurous, cryptic + entertaining storylines to try in and around the City of Oaks:

🔎 Amaze Room Escapes, 3209 Gresham Lake Rd. | 3-11 players | $25/person | Plot your escape from prison, the Mysterious Room, or the Black & White.

🔎 Game On Escapes, 107 Edinburgh S. Dr., Cary | 2-8 players | $27-35 | In addition to themes like jungle, manor, and sorcerer, seasonal rooms are offered.

🔎 Nerd Escape Room,117 Glenwood Ave. | 2-10 players | $28/person | Book one of four puzzling rooms with unique storylines. Pro tip: be sure to notice the matching items in your room.

🔎 Room 5280, 123 Glenwood Ave. | 2-8 players | $28/person | Choose from four different rooms, including the spooky Dark Room with a 40% success rate (at least you’ll have a flashlight).

🔎 Tarheel Escapes, 140 W. Franklin St., Chapel Hill | 3-8 players | $29/person | Game of Thrones and Indian Jones inspired escape rooms. “Snakes?! Why’d It Have To Be Snakes?” (We hope there are no snakes.)

🔎 The Tower Escapes, 115 W. Morgan St. | 2-10 players | $28/person | Escape rooms like the Sir Walter Speakeasy + the Castle of Loches.

We have a confession to make. It took us one hour and eight minutes to escape.

Get an IV hydration treatment at Hydrate Medical

Hey Raleigh, Rachel here. 👋 I recently stopped by Hydrate Medical’s new location in Cary (2024 Renaissance Park Place, Unit 2024), which opened in early December, to get an IV hydration treatment. Here’s how it went.

The med spa atmosphere creates a relaxing experience | Photo by the RALtoday team

What we tried (with pricing):

IV hydration treatments (aka drips) are used to help boost the immune system and combat hangovers, fight jet lag fatigue, help athletes recover + more. There are a number of different drips to choose from when you get a treatment.

Pro tip: Treatments range from $79-179, and new customers can get their First Time Drip for $79.

As a first-timer, I worked with the Hydrate Medical team to see what would work for me. I decided to try the Hydrate Super Immune Boost treatment ($179) to make sure I felt my best while traveling for the holidays.

Immediately after my IV drip, I felt more alert and relaxed. In the following days, I found I slept better leaving me more energized throughout the day. The Hydrate Medical team can help determine which treatment best fits you + your health goals.

See how the rest of my experience went below. 💧*

Biz

  • Ruth’s Chris Steak House, located at 4381 Lassiter Mill Rd., has closed until 2024 due to redevelopment of the North Hill’s shopping district. This is the chain’s only Raleigh location, but fear not. There are locations in Cary + Durham to get your fill of steak + lobster. 🦞 (Triangle Business Journal)
  • A few days after the closing of its first fund, Jurassic Capital invested $2.5 million in Raleigh startup Cycle Labs. The funding will be put towards the software and services company’s sales and marketing division + hiring new team members. 🚲 (Triangle Business Journal)

Arts

  • Artsplosure is accepting artist applications for the annual Raleigh Arts Festival until Mon., Feb. 7. This year, the festival will be on Sat., May 21 + Sun., May 22, giving artists the opportunity to showcase their work to 75,000+ attendees and to win various prizes. Click here to learn more and apply.  🖼️

Travel

  • American Airlines announced this week that the return of its flight from RDU to London will be postponed (again) until Tues., April 5. To see other international flights coming to RDU later this year, click here. ✈️  (Triangle Business Journal)

Community

  • To celebrate 50 years as a state cabinet-level agency, the NC Dept. of Natural and Cultural Resources will host regional celebrations and online content for visitors to learn more about how the department preserves our state’s history + what it governs. See the in-person and virtual events here.
  • Durham will now begin accepting applications for its second round of the Emergency Rental Assistance Program (ERAP). The program — which paused after social services stopped taking applications in October — will provide 18 months of rent + utility assistance to Durham residents who have experienced financial hardship due to the COVID-19 pandemic. (The News & Observer)

Number

  • 3,425. That’s how many pets were adopted from the Wake County Animal Shelter in 2021. The shelter also reports that they helped 1,114 pets become reunited with their owners + oversaw 8,067 volunteer hours. Isn’t this paw-some? 🐶

Kids

  • Looking for some family fun this weekend? WRAL has created a list of seven family-friendly activities in the Triangle to do from Fri., Jan. 14-Sun., Jan 16. The list includes Cary’s Under the Silver Moon Lantern Parade, Space Weekend at Marbles Kids Museum + more. Give it a read here. 🌌(WRAL)

Eat

  • Looking for a light, easy breakfast hack? We suggest taking two Apple Cinnamon Quaker Rice Cakes from Lowes Foods and topping them with natural peanut butter + banana slices. Pair with a giant cold brew to complete the meal. 🍏*

Find the golden ticket 🍫

Instagram

When Charlie and the Chocolate factory meets Raleigh.

Videri Chocolate — located at 327 W. Davie St. across from Boxcar Bar + Arcade — has hidden one golden ticket underneath a classic dark chocolate bar. While they won’t guarantee that you’ll take over the factory once you find it, it is redeemable for $500 worth of chocolate from Videri’s factory.

Try your luck and purchase a dark chocolate bar in-store or online for a chance to find the golden ticket. Best of luck to our local chocolate connoisseurs.  🍫

THE WRAP

Editor’s Pick: A fun fact I learned yesterday was that Durham has more state historic sites than any other county in NC.

If you’re interested in learning more, I recommend checking out Black Wall Street — a hub of Black-owned businesses that blossomed during the early 1900s — and Dr. Moore, alongside John Merrick + C.C. Spaulding, who are credited with establishing the hub.

Tying the knot locally 💚

@betterwithju

It’s wedding season in the City of Oaks. This bridal party ate breakfast at Layered Croissanterie + hand-selected flowers from the NC Farmers Market for a bouquet. Before heading to the courthouse, the bride and groom took photos in Pullen Park.
